Do It Yourself Home Improvement Tips

When it comes to doing the job yourself, the best home improvement tip you can get is to have a well-stocked and easily accessible toolbox. The following is a list of the six most important tools you can have in your toolbox to complete nearly all home improvement needs.
First, the toolbox itself is an important part of a well-equipped toolbox. If you don't plan on using your tools that often it is a good idea to get a molded plastic toolbox so you know what tools to look for when they go missing. Otherwise a simple plastic tackle box can work well for your first toolbox. It largely depends on personal preference as to what type of toolbox will work for you.
The second item isn't really a specific tool rather it is a helpful guide. You should have a home repair manual on hand at all times. Check your local bookstore for an excellent option or check online reviews to find a popular manual. A repair manual will give you the basic information you need to do the simple jobs yourself at home without having to call in a professional.
Third, you should have at least one hammer in your toolbox even if it is only used for driving nails and breaking things apart. The best hammer to have is a claw hammer because it can help drive nails and remove them. If you are going to have more than one hammer other excellent options to include in order of usefulness include: framing hammer, upholstery hammer, ball-peen hammer, rubber mallet, wooden mallet, and sledgehammer. Again it all depends on your skill level and how often you plan on making home improvements.
Fourth, you should have a set of screwdrivers to help tighten or loosen screws. The two most basic types to have include: the slotted and Phillips. You should carry a few of each in varying sizes. Other screwdrivers you may want to consider depending on how many projects you plan on doing include: PoziDriv, Robertson, Crosspoint, Torx, and Hex.
The fifth item is pliers. A good set of pliers can give you gripping ability and leverage. However, there are several types of pliers that have different functions. For example, cutting pliers can sever or pinch off materials. Gripping pliers are either flat nose pliers, round nose pliers, or needle nose pliers. You should have at least one pair of gripping pliers. If you plan to do some electrical work then you should also include crimping pliers. The sixth item is a tape measure. For home improvements, a good all purpose length is a twenty-five foot tape measure.
